Taiwan is invaded by Red China in the latest technothriller by T.J. McFadden. In a story that could be torn from tomorrow's headlines, Xiao Ying Tien, "The Smiling Man" hopes to use the might of modern China to crush the last remnant of the Republic of China and solidify his grip on power. Against him stand two leaders on Taiwan President Ch'iu Wang Chen, a cynic who rediscovers his lost idealism in Taiwan's darkest hour, and General Sung Chung Tam, "The Chessmaster", a pure soldier dedicated to winning at any cost, against any odds. They lead the free people of Taiwan in a desperate fight against the corrupt "People's" Republic and it's new military power. The latest planes, ships and weapons are used alongside weapons straight out of the history books as armies and fleets clash to determine the future of China.
Among the millions caught up in this war there are
Mike Shannon- a reporter covering his first international event, who must fight his own battle between being a detached observer and caring for a people fighting in defense of their freedom.
Group Leader Zheng Yiguan, a middle-aged idealist whose dreams of the People's Revolution of his youth run aground on the harsh realities of what China has become.
Captain Daniel "Day" O'Reilly, an ex-USAF pilot who volunteers to join a new American Volunteer Group, a reborn "Flying Tigers" flying in defense of the Republic of China.
Sgt. Soo Kuo-K'ang, a young ROC tank commander who must become a leader under the most desperate circumstances.
Premier Li Wolan, General Secretary of the Communist Party, who feels the power of his party slipping away in the new, modern People's Republic.
In the tradition of Tom Clancy's "Red Storm Rising" this novel tells the story of these and other people, of the strategies, combat and politics of what could be the next great war.
Reviews
"a very good mix of characters sketches, a fast pace, and lots of bang bang. Of special merit is the way he deftly handles infowar operations"- Scott Palter, STRATEGY PAGE

"T.J. McFadden’s new novel about a PRC invasion of Taiwan is strong on military knowledge and competent on character development"-"a factual, hardboiled thriller"- Bradley Winterton, TAIPEI TIMES

Dragon Storm China invades Taiwan edition by TJ McFadden Literature Fiction eBooks

I really enjoy books where the author gives the reader a scenario of what they think would happen should current or former belligerent nations actually get into an all out shooting war. Israel v. Iran/Hamas, North v. South Korea, NATO v. Warsaw Pact, etc. Books like: Red Storm Rising, Red Phoenix, Israel Strikes, Fourth Crisis, Vortex, Cauldron, etc. In most of these books, America's allies are attacked and they are saved by the overwhelming might of the United States military. People write things like this because the 20th Century gave us several examples of it, and because, it is likely a true to life scenario. But, what if, for whatever reason, the US chose to sit things out if the Russians came pouring through the Fulda Gap. Or, North Korea comes across the 38th Parallel in force, and we provide no help to the South, or, as in the case of this book: What if China makes a play to grab Taiwan by force, and the United States doesn't fire a shot. Well, eventually, through the actions of an aggressive fleet commander who is acting to protect his force, the Americans do come in, but the vast majority of this book explores the scenario of what if Taiwan took on the might of Red China by itself. Even though they know they are next on China's menu, regional allies of the US: Japan, The Philippines, South Korea, & Thailand. all follow America's lead and sit on the sidelines as well. I had always assumed that Taiwan could never hold its own for any length of time against mainland China, and, maybe they can't. However, this author seems to think they have a shot, and maybe they do. Makes you think. The author also weaves a pretty good storyline into the mix. It was very educational for me to read about Taiwan's military equipment, and the author's take on how the two countries might slug it out should it ever comes to blows between them. The books makes you look at Taiwan in a whole new light. When I found out the American military would be absent from most of the book, I almost didn't read it at all. I'm glad I read it though, and if you like these types of books, so will you.

I found this to be an excellent book. There was good character development, a balanced approach in presenting both sides of the conflict, and for once the US wasn't one of the main players. I wish the story had more fully developed the call for the President to resign.
The author's grasp of military equipment, tactics, and geopolitical timeliness is excellent.
As always, I wish someone would hire some full-time proofreadwers to review these books before they are released. The number of obvious mistakes is very irritating and detracts from the enjoyment of the book.
Very well written, highly suspenseful and highly intelligent. The drawback to this subject is that English speakers have a hard time distinguishing Chinese names, and this author had to write under that difficulty. What would have made me rank this 5 star is if there were a bunch of maps by which the reader could understand better what was happening. I find McFadden's treatment of military tactics, strategy and battle description to be absolutely first rate. Will buy his other books now with avidity.
I sometimes got confused as the narrative shifted between sides of the conflict. I was easily confused by the foreign names, especially since the majority of them on both sides were Chinese. USA action was disappointing but predictable. A good read.
At first glance I did not think that I would like this book. However, after I got "into" it a bit, it sort of grew on me. The book has an interesting and thought provoking scenario which seemed far-fetched to begin with, but became a bit more plausible as the strategy and tactics of the two China's unrolled. (This was made particularly more plausible given the real world policies and attitudes of our current administration of leading from behind.) The characters are interesting and believable and the author's insight into high tech weaponry makes the book a winner. I recommend it for those folks who dig the "what if" war scenario's.
For a military novels, a war novel, it was okay, perhaps even better than okay. But I had the most trouble keeping the combatants in the proper order or place in the story. With all of the Chinese names for not only the people, but for weapons and for equipment. I seemed to always be in a state of confusion as to who and what were who and what. I'm sorry, really. I think if the story had been Chinese against Russian, it might have been a great military/combat story. I hate to rate it so low, but it was so confusing.

Best military fiction I have read in over a decade or two since team Yankee and red storm rising. McFadden did a fantastic job. He did not breeze over the fighting and droll on and on about character development and irrelevant side stories like some military authors. The action was good and very well developed and extensive. So many of these books seem to have a quarter or less actual battle or combat pages and three quarters buildup to it. Of course by the time you get to the combat pages you are already bored to tears and have stopped reading. This book should be mandatory reading for any would be writers in this genre.
McFadden gives us a detailed, minute by minute rendition of a hypothetical invasion of Taiwan by Communist China. The pace is relentless, the specific details of the weapons systems involved accurate and up to the minute. The strength of his writing is in the clever plotting. He has thought of aspects of the invented invasion that would not have occurred to me.
If you want an up to the minute techno-military novel to burn through, this might be the ticket for you. He gives us a view of the horror and waste of war through the eyes of many different people, but always from a human perspective. I found a few good funny lines among the depictions of the carnage too!
A fascinating, fast read with never a dull moment.
